when you see boehner calling the caucus and say, hey, let's aavoid the nasty showdowns. that's saying let's not be hostage takers. you see obama learning how to deal with the caucus. let's extend the middle class tax cuts, right now, let's do it. he puts them in a bad position and making it look like, look, middle class, they are not giving you what you need. so learning how to work with them, learning that we have to have some compromise, i see some tea leaves that we may have a better next couple of years. we'll see. >> it will be interesting, if a deal is struck. i don't think it will nearly as good as for republicans as the deal that the president offered them. the grand deal that had been offered before. you know, in some ways i actually think the problem for republicans and for conservatives is that a lot of their ideas and principles have actually won. you know, since ronald reagan we no longer have 70% tax rates on the highest income earners. nobody is arguing for that. we're arguing to go back to 39.6%. on health care reform, the president's health care reform w

>> speaker john boehner on friday, appeared to give a little ground, suggesting that limits on tax deductions could be part of a deal, something that senior obama adviser, david axelrod, said was a step in the right direction. >> i think the speaker's comments have been encouraging. and obviously, there's money to be gained by closing some of these loopholes and applying them to deficit reduction. so, i think there's a lot of ways to skin this cat, so long as everybody comes with a positive, constructive attitude toward the task. >> axelrod also pointed out that exit polling from the election showed 60% of the american agreed with raising taxes on the highest earners. >>> there's a renewed focus on immigration policy, following a presidential election that saw a growing divide between republicans and the hispanic community. now, two senators on opposite sides of the aisle says they're confident they can push through reform. chuck schumer and lindsey graham are revisiting a plan they proposed together back in 2010. >> i think we have a darn good chance, using this blueprint, to get something d

boehner still doesn't control his caucus. we don't have to ask what the american people wanted. president obama ran on an explicit program of raising taxes on top earners. and boehner is still talking about the romney plan, mess around with loopholes and take away loopholes from top earners. that was romney's plan and romney lost. the president holds the cards here. the world won't come to an end on january 1st if all the rates expire. it's more of a curve. i think we can afford to go off it. >> we'll see. as we quickly approach it. my thanks to the power panel today. i really appreciate your time today. >>> coming up next, a bipartisan plan to fix the nation's debt. the co-chairs are going to join me, ed rendell and former new hampshire senator judd gregg will join me to talk about this. we want to know what you think. should general petraeus have resigned? tweet me your thoughts about this or find me on facebook. oun] today, jason is here to volunteer to help those in need. when a twinge of back pain surprises him. morning starts in high spirits, but there's a growing pain in

i missed some of the comments that john boehner made. let me give you a quick summary of the highlights here, and let's call them highlights because finally kumbaya. hope it lasts. the senate majority leader harry reid suggested both of us, we're both going to have to give up what we want and call this the cornerstone of working something out. that sounds good. then nancy pelosi, the house minority leader, saying that this has to be about cuts. this has to be about revenue. this has to be about growth and that she is confident a solution is in sight. sounds good, too. and then the house minority leader or rather the minority leader mitch mcconnell also suggesting that this was a constructive meeting and that we are prepared to put revenue on the table. they just emerged from the meeting. looked like they were going right back in. maybe they were going to have lunch. i don't know. they sure deserve it if they're able to come to rhetoric like that any any case. take to you break for a moment and hopefully i can scramble up wolf blitzer. gi
